hearing graphics

This is a headshot of Angelina Castellini in a red shirt with short hedgehog like hair and red earrings.

hello and welcome!

My name is Angelina and I am the founder of impro studio. I have had two experiences of sudden hearing loss and am single sided deaf (SSD) since August '23. While trying to communicate to hearing people what it is like to live SSD with tinnitus, I found that the most effective way to explain my experience is to use a simple graphic. After lots of positive feedback, I have decided to publish my own series of graphics displaying a wider variety of hearing impairments. While these are representations ("the map is not the territory"), I hope they will facilitate conversations about hearing and how we make sense of our world.

You can download the graphics for free, read my blog posts describing my hearing journey, and support this project by donating to our hearing fund.

introduction
Hearing with two ears. No tinnitus. This graphic shows a smiling face with two ears. In the corners are music notes, a speech bubble, a car and a phone, symbolising different sounds. The person can locate where they are in space and focus on them separately.
Hearing with right ear. Tinnitus left side. SSD left. This graphic shows a person with one ear on the right side. They have an s-shaped mouth. On their right, the images of music notes, a speech bubble, a car and a cellphone all overlap. On their left, there is a grey swirl with some red stars representing noises of tinnitus.
Hearing with left ear. Hyperacusis. Tinnitus both sides. SSD right. This graphic shows a person with one ear on their left side. They have a sad mouth. On their left, the images of music notes, a speech bubble, a car and a cellphone all overlap and are big in size to represent hyperacusis. On both sides is a grey swirl with some red stars representing noises of tinnitus.
Hearing with left ear. Tinnitus right side. SSD right. This graphic shows a person with one ear on their left side. They have an s-shaped mouth. On their left, the images of music notes, a speech bubble, a car and a cellphone all overlap. On their right, there is a grey swirl with some red stars representing noises of tinnitus.
